winter wedding in minnesota

In the world of weddings, winter is the off-season – even in Minnesota, where snow rarely keeps anyone indoors!  So if you’re planning a Minnesota winter wedding, you may feel like you don’t have much to go on – but don’t fret. Today, we’re showcasing Jamie and Charlie’s Minnesota winter wedding and discussing perks and tips to these seasonal celebrations of love 🙂

First, let’s talk perks of a Minnesota winter wedding:

  • MORE VENUE OPTIONS: Sure, some outdoor venues may not be available, but because there are fewer winter weddings, winter couples tend to have their pick of the best spots, indoor and out!
  • GETTING COSY: Winter weddings stay true to many of the seasonal tenets that make winter great, the cosy factor! We’re talking festive decorations, fires burning, cosy decor and blankets, cider and cocoa, you name it – a Minnesota winter wedding can have it 🙂
  • LET IT SNOW: Let’s be real – there will probably be snow on the ground, but that’s a good thing! Bridals and couples portraits in a snowy landscape are unique and beautiful, and because not a lot of people have winter weddings, they are extra special shots.
  • FLEXING CREATIVITY: If you’re looking for quirky wedding options, winter offers a whole league of creative ideas that wouldn’t work in summer – like a frolicking on a frozen lake, an ice-skating reception, or a grand exit by sleigh!
  • BRAGGING RIGHTS: Did you just go out in 15 degree weather to catch a gorgeous shot of your wedding gown in the fresh fallen snow?? Yeah you did! You’re one tough cookie!

Okay, let’s balance with a some thoughtful winter tips 🙂

  • BE WEATHER-WISE: Weather is unpredictable in every season, and winter is no exception, so make sure you and your venue have a back up plan! Were you thinking an outdoor ceremony in cosy coats but now there’s a slush storm? Be sure your venue has an indoor option. Is the storm of the century predicted to hit right around toast time? Talk to your venue about emergency date change options, or consider venues with on-site accommodations for you and your guests!
  • PLAN FOR THE COLD: This may seem like stating the obvious, but it doesn’t hurt! Be sure you have wedding scarves, shawls, coats, hats, gloves, etc. available for outdoor photo-ops. Wearing amazing heels for the indoor ceremony? Pack a pair of winter boots to kick around in the snow outside too! Some couples may even want to keep some extra blankets, coats, and cold weather gear available for less prepared guests or out-of-towners who might not know what a Minnesota winter wedding can entail!
  • TALK WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER: If you want epic outdoor bridals or couples portraits, make sure you let your photographer know, so they can plan for their own warmth, safety, and for the best gear to get you the shots you want in a winter environment.
  • DON’T SWEAT IT: No matter happens, remember that it’s your big day, surrounded by those you love, and it’s going to be great!

Jamie and Charlie chose to go traditional and instead of having a first look before the ceremony, they did a first prayer together with no peaking!
